This is the autobiography of Janet Lim, who was born in China to parents who abandoned her, sold as a domestic servant to a family in Singapore, from which she managed to escape and train as a nurse as the Second World War was approaching. On escaping from Singapore she fell into Japanese hands and remained their prisoner until the end of the war. This is reputed to be the first book written in English by a woman from Singapore.
