Return to Malaya
RH Bruce Lockhart
Lockhart initially came out to Malaya to set up a rubber plantation in Negeri Sembilan, ran off with the ward of one of the sultans there and returned to the UK with malaria. In this book he returns in the 1930s on a fact finding trip to both British Malaya and the Dutch East Indies. His brief assessment was that the British maintained their rule by dressing for dinner and teaching 'the natives' to play soccer. Whereas he felt the Dutch had a much harder task in maintaining their position on the other other side of the Straits of Malacca. 426 pages with an index. Good Hardback in a Good Dust Jacket
