Reflections of Pre-Independence Malaya
The author was the great nephew of Onn Ja'afar, one of the founders of UMNO, the largest political party in Malaysia both before and after independence. Abid was a part of Ja'afar's extended household living with the politician and acting as his aide through the early days of the formation of UMNO leading on to the granting of independence. The book is a collection of behind the scenes insights and anecdotes from this crucial time in Malaysia's history. As happened in many post-colonial countries at the time of independence the country's affairs were handled by a clique of the upper echelons of society who were often related to each other. The author, being part of Ja'afar's family, portrays this aspect well. There are also numerous historic black and white photographs, an index and a collection of Ja'afar's speeches translated into English. 436 pages.
