Murder on the Verandah
Lawlor tries to get to the bottom of a famous scandal of pre-World War I Kuala Lumpur where a Eurasian mistress murdered her British lover. The story formed the basis of Somerset Maugham's short story "The Letter" which Hollywood later made into a film starring Bette Davis. The author sets out to show how the drama tipyfied the stifling colonial society where the Brits behaved abominably to each other and worse to the majority population whom they tried to rule and often found difficult to understand. 268 pages.
