Home and Away:
Indonesian Women and Their Unique Transnational Migration Experiences in Malaysia
--
Mashitah Hamidi
Malaysia's economy is underpinned by migrant labour from other parts of Asia. Arguably Indonesian women workers, usually employed as domestic or factory workers, are the most invisible and therefore often the most vulnerable part of this labour pool. In this book through interviews with both first-time and repeat migrants, the author not only brings to light the regulatory hurdles faced by these women, but also their experiences at work. Despite their marginalisation, these women often develop a capacity to resist and also negotiate around and comply with their circumstances. 146 pages with tables, a bibliography and an index.
