From 1884 onwards Batu Gajah was made the administrative headquarters of Kinta District, which grew to be the richest district in the Federated Malay States owing to the abundance of tin deposits in the area. The author, whose family settled in the area, traces its history in the first half of the twentieth century based on research in official records as well as accounts of the colourful characters thrown up by the Tin Rush.
