Memories of Malaya
New. Having been dragged away from his childhood in India at the time of independence, the author was dumped in a UK with which he quickly became disenchanted. He tried returning to India as an adult, but couldn't find the India he remembered, so arrived in Penang in 1957 with the equivalent of three straits dollars in his pocket. Of course Malaysia had just declared independence, but nevertheless he made sufficient of his experience here for it to be a springboard for a successful career as a writer afterwards. He certainly managed to pick up enough material hunting for guerillas on the Malaysian-Thai border, chatting with the French ambassador when a ghost walked into the room, helping a prisoner in a fake jail break and scraping through many similar escapades. 300 pages.
