Malay Concepts of Democracy and Community, 1945-1950
Prior to the Second World War Malay society on the peninsula an in East Sumatra had been dominated by the kerjaan, sultans' rule. Postwar nascent nationalism in both Indonesia and Malaya eroded the role of the sultans leading to their elimination in Indonesia and reduction to a more ceremonial role in Malaysia. The author contrasts and compares the nationalist movements in both countries in an attempt to determine why the results were so different. This re-edited edition of the Oxford University Press edition of 1993 has a foreword by Anthony Milner and a new preface by the author 325 pages a bibliography, glossary and index.
