Arabic Loan-Words in Malay:
A Comparative Study
Malay, like any other thriving living language, grows with the infusion of new words borrowed from outside influences. While today English is the main influence on an expanding Malay vocabulary, this book reminds us of the second major external linguistic influence, Arabic. The book, a significant revision of an earlier edition, also looks at how Arabic has crept into many other languages as well, while keeping its primary focus on Malay. There is also an interesting appendix of Arabic loan words in use at the beginning of the 20th century in Malay, although a considerable number have given way to English loan words in common speech. 252 pages with indices, appendices and a bibliography.
