History of Negri Sembilan
Gullick traces the history of this distinctive state which is best known for its social organisation and land tenure based on matrilineal descent. These customs imported by Minangkabau settlers from Indonesia struggled, as did the peoples politically, buffeted by both colonial and Islamic interference. The nine original states that make up this small confederacy eventually settled down in 1898 growing in prosperity as land became exploited for rubber and other commercial products. 211 pages.
