The Craft of Gardens

Ji Cheng
Originally published in 1631, this is the earliest manual of Chinese garden design. This edition has been translated by Alison Hardie with a foreword by Maggie Keswick. The basic concept of Ji Cheng's designs is that gardens should be enclosed places of refuge, barely visible to the world outside. Even within the garden secrecy pervades with an emphasis on nooks, mazes, zig zag paths and other features that lure the visitor to explore further. 144 pages with several colour photographs of gardens built in Ji Cheng's style, an appendix, notes, dates of the Chinese dynasties and an index.
