Pierre Boulle

The author of The Bridge Over the River Kwai sets this novel in Malaya in a jungle rubber plantation. The book's title is an acronym for the Society for Overseas Promotion of Horticulture, Industry and Agriculture, the company which owns the plantation and regulates the lives of most of the characters in the novel. Boulle's wit and descriptive style bring to life the expatriates' isolated life of intrigue and romance. 320 pages.
