Penang would probably not have been chosen by UNESCO as a world heritage site if it only had a few hundred buildings testifying to its thriving multicultural existence for more than 200 years. Despite the gentrification that followed on from being certified by UNESCO, many of those buildings still house many traditional trades which still serve Penang's citizens as they served past generations.
