This book arose out of the author's initial work amongst Mandailing communities in North Sumatra where he was disappointed to find that the community's distinctive political and social system had been wiped out during the Indonesian Revolution. He therefore switched his search to thirty-two Mandailing communities in Malaysia, where there had been no revolution. He was equally disappointed because many typical Mandailing characteristics had been subsumed into various Government 'Malayanisation' programmes. However he continued his research to determine the extent to which Malaysian Mandailing communities still retain characteristics similar to those of their Indonesian cousins. 169 pages.
