The purpose of this manual, originally written in 1881, was to be, according to the author, the first introduction for non-native Malay speakers to colloquial Malay. Previous manuals had been more academic. Having said that, the 210 pagemanual is preceded by a 48 page a sholarly discourse on the influence of Sanskrit on the language.The remainder of the book contains a review of the main elements of grammar together with exercises for the learner.
